Many people dream of a holiday on the island of Fakarava. This atoll is located in French Polynesia, specifically in the Tuamotu archipelago. Fakarava is the second largest atoll in all of French Polynesia, and belongs to the commune of the same name, which is made up of six other atolls.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
Fakarava is such a unique destination. Its isolated geographical location from the mainlands allowed a whole variety of marine animals and plants, composing this incredible biodiversity, to grow peacefully without suffering from human disturbances. Being populated by less than 2000 inhabitants, the island’s natural environment has, so far, hardly been impacted by its residents.
The island of Fakarava has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2006. The benefits of the atoll considered a biosphere reserve resides in its prevention for a rapid urban growth and in the protection of the Marine & Land Fauna & Flora which remains the main concern.
